I’m willing to bet you’ve tried setting up a regular schedule, but it’s hard to squeeze in time for gamification with everything else you have to do. 

And when you can finally wedge out an hour here or there, it only makes you feel more defeated because, let’s face it, an hour isn’t enough to achieve the deep engagement and educational outcomes you’re aiming for.

One of the biggest challenges people face is finding the balance between their everyday “life” activities – such as grading, planning, attending meetings, dealing with administrative tasks, and finding some personal downtime – and integrating innovative teaching strategies like gamification.

It’s hard to stay motivated to  enhance student engagement and learning outcomes when you’re literally squeezing in a half hour here and there to plan and implement gamification strategies but never really “all-in”.

Speaking from experience, transforming your classroom into an engaging, gamified learning environment takes dedication. And TIME.

Best Time for Gamified Learning: Midday can work, too

If mornings are an absolute hard pass, tackling gamification in the early afternoon can work too.

You just have to be very diligent with your schedule. We all know how easy it is to procrastinate, right?

For example, if you schedule time for gamified learning between 12-2 every day, make sure you get your other “busy” tasks and learning outcomes out of the way in the morning.

Don’t let those other tasks distract you or linger on! It’s too easy to get pulled into the “just one more thing before I switch” rut.

It may help to use lunchtime to shift your focus and mentally prepare for the switch to gamification. That can actually help shift your classroom pace and help you adjust to introducing interactive and playful learning at that time.

On the plus side, it’ll likely be easy to stay consistent with gamification in the afternoon. Most people, including students, are more physically energetic and alert at that time. 

This natural uptick in energy can be harnessed to re-energize the class after lunch, combating the typical afternoon slump.

Engaging students in gamified activities post-lunch can lead to improved concentration, retention, and participation. It can transform the second half of the day into a dynamic and productive learning period, making gamification a smart scheduling choice.

Here are some ideas to get you started:

1. Start Small and Build Gradually

Begin by integrating game elements into existing lesson plans rather than overhauling your entire curriculum at once. For example, turn a quiz into a game-like challenge with points or badges for correct answers. This approach allows you to gauge student reactions and make adjustments without overwhelming yourself or your students.

2. Incorporate Storytelling

Games are compelling because they tell a story. Try to frame your lessons within a narrative where students can embark on learning “quests” or solve problems as part of a larger story. If this is your “go” time, more power to you! 

Personally, I find my focus tends to wane after 2 pm. For many educators, the end of the day is when they find a second wind of energy.

Scheduling gamified learning activities after the day’s primary responsibilities means you’ll have fewer distractions and more focused engagement with your students.

This timing can be particularly beneficial if you have other commitments that occupy the mornings and early afternoons in your classroom. This might make it only possible to dig deep into more creative and engaging teaching approaches after things settle down. 

It’s also easier to maintain concentration for longer hours in a quiet, settled environment. This makes the end of the day an ideal time for immersive learning experiences that require focus and energy.

So if you find yourself with a burst of focus and energy as the day winds down, harnessing that for gamification can be a perfect choice.

Who needs to spend the end of the day grinding out traditional learning?

And if you’re not naturally energized at the end of the school day, but it is the only time you have to gamify learning, here are some tips to make the most of it:

  • Incorporate Mini-Relaxation Techniques: Before diving into gamification activities, take a moment with your class to engage in some quick relaxation techniques. This could be a minute of deep breathing, a brief mindfulness exercise, or a quick stretch. These activities can serve as a mental reset for both you and your students, helping everyone transition into the gamification part of the day with renewed focus and energy.
  • Prepare Gamification Materials in Advance: To ensure a smooth transition into gamified learning at the end of the day, have all your materials and game plans prepared and easily accessible. This preparation might include setting up any digital platforms, organizing physical game components, or reviewing rules and objectives to confidently lead the activity. By having everything ready to go, you can seamlessly move into the gamification activity without losing precious time to set up, keeping energy levels high.
  • Use Energizing Gamification Techniques: Choose games and activities that naturally inject energy and enthusiasm into the classroom. This could involve movement-based games that get students out of their seats, competitive challenges that spark excitement, or collaborative games that foster interaction and teamwork. Selecting the right type of game can reinvigorate a tired class and make the most of the end-of-day learning opportunity.
  • Leverage Student Leaders: Identify students who are particularly enthusiastic about gamified learning or take leadership roles naturally. Ultimately, the best time for gamification is whenever you’re most productive. And by that, I mean: awake, clear, with a few hours of devoted time ahead of you to fully engage with your students and the material.

Whether it’s harnessing the fresh energy of the morning, utilizing the energizing potential of the afternoon, or capitalizing on the more relaxed time at the end of the school day, the optimal time depends on your unique teaching style, your students’ energy levels, and the structure of your school day.
